CHAMPAIGN COUNTY AFL-CIO LABOR DAY PARADE AND CELEBRATION!

Parade 10:00 am
Celebration Picnic immediately following
Parade begins at Illinois and Broadway in Urbana traveling down Broadway to
Washington. It then goes east on Washington to Lierman where it turns north to the Brookens Building parking lot.
A Celebration Party follows at Prairie Park with food, beverages, inflatable games for the children, Kilborn Alley band, raffle with $1500 grand prize.

11th Annual Good Day Neighbor
Blossom Basket Florist will host the 11th Good Day Neighbor Day September 8th starting at 7AM until flowers are gone.
Bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Times Center.
A night of Afro-Caribbean Flava, Culture & Riddim"
In essence, the collaborative event will feature Afro-Caribbean flavor
throughout the live performances and interviews at V. Picasso's in
Downtown Urbana on 9/9@9pm. The last event we filmed there welcomed over a
hundred people to watch a night of Cuban folk music, poetry and live
dancing.

Whitetail Unlimited 3rd Annual
Local Chapter of Whitetail Unlimited will be hosting their 3rd Annual
Banquet on Saturday, September 11, 2010. The banquet will be held at the
Gifford Community Center, 101 S. Main St, Gifford, IL. Registration
deadline is September 3, 2010. Social Hour will begin at 5:00pm and
dinner will start at 7:00pm with a 2-meat buffet.
This fundraising event will include a dinner, auction, and prizes with a
wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at
WTU events.

Feline Wellness
A Guide to a Lifetime of Wellness for Your Cat. Studies have shown that the number of cats kept as pets outnumbers dogs, yet they receive significantly less veterinary care. Further studies haveindicated that an inability to recognize signs of illness or injury is a key factor why cat owners are unaware of their cat's medical needs. As
the companion who cares for your cat every day, there's much that you can
do to keep your cat healthy and happy. Whether it's ensuring your cat gets
proper veterinary care, understanding behavior and environmental issues
that promote a healthy life style, or the common signs of aging and
age-related diseases, this lecture provides guidance on making the most of
your cat's life from kittenhood through its senior years.

Champaign County Court Appointed Special Advocates seeks additional volunteer advocates
Champaign County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will be conducting training classes for potential new advocates to speak up for abused and neglected children in Champaign County Court.
CASA will provide all the training necessary to become an advocate. No specific experience is required, however you must be 21 years old.

America's POW's and MIA's Special Ceremony
The Air Force Jr. ROTC Saber Team from Alton High School in Alton, Illinois
will honor America's POW's and MIA's with a special ceremony at the Chanute
Air Museum in Rantoul, Illinois. The event will be held at sunset (7:00
p.m.) on National POW/MIA Remembrance Day (Friday, September 17th). The
"POW/MIA Table Ceremony" pays a distinctive tribute to all POW's and MIA's regardless of branch of service. The public is invited to this emotional and unique observance that combines the spoken word and music, symbolism and
precision drill movements. Following the service, the table will be left as
part of the permanent POW/MIA display at the museum.

Antique Car and Truck Show
There will be a Antique Car and Truck show Sunday September 19th at the Dana Colbert Park on East Church Street in Savoy.
Registration is 8AM to 10AM. The show is 10AM to 4PM.
It is $15 dollars per vehicle.

Shriners Hospitals for Children 2010 Tournament Program
The Champaign County Bassmasters and Illini Shrine Club will have a regional tournament on September 19th. The tournament is to be held at Springfield Lake.

Illini Union Rec Room Offers U.S. Armed Forces Veterans Student Bowling League
The Illini Union Rec Room will offer a bowling league for veterans and currently enlisted members of the United
States Armed Forces. The league was started last spring with funding from the Student Affairs Strategic Initiative Grant Program and in cooperation with the Counseling Center to assist armed service veterans in establishing a healthy social network as they adapt to campus life at the University of Illinois.
League will meet bi-weekly on Tuesdays at 6:30pm beginning September 21st and is limited to 48 people. University of
Illinois veterans can register for free by September 14th on-line or in person at Illini Union Rec Room, Lower Level; 1401 W. Green St., Urbana, IL 61821.
Wish Granting Volunteers Needed
What can you do to help brighten the life of a child battling a life-threatening illness? Bring hope, strength and joy back into their lives by becoming a volunteer with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois. The Foundation is hosting a free training for wish granting volunteers on Thursday, September 23rd from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in Champaign, Illinois. Also, the Foundation is especially looking for volunteers who are bilingual in English and Spanish to fill a continuing need for bilingual wish granters.
To attend the training, potential volunteers must complete the volunteer application and an online training in advance; therefore, RSVP is required by September 15th. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. All volunteers must be over 18, must submit an application, reference and background check and must complete an online and brief in-person training to begin granting wishes. 2010 Champaign-Urbana International Humanitarian Awards Call for Nominations
Champaign, IL.-The cities of Champaign and Urbana are accepting nominations
for the 2010 Champaign-Urbana International Humanitarian Awards. Awardees will be
honored Thursday, September 30, 2010, at Hilton Garden Inn, 1501 S. Neil Street,
Champaign, with a 6 p.m. reception and 6:30 p.m. dinner program.
The purpose of the International Humanitarian Awards are:
• to honor individuals/organizations whose work has contributed significantly to
international understanding, cooperation, friendship and development;
• to recognize the richness of Champaign County’s international contributions,
concerns and commitments in the following categories: agriculture, hospitality,
humanitarian relief, human rights, research/education, and trade and business;
• to educate the public about the connections that exist between our local and
global community.
Nominations are being accepted and should illustrate how a candidate’s
extraordinary international service has improved the lives and contributed to the well being
of people in the following areas: agriculture; hospitality; humanitarian relief; human rights;
research/education; trade and business.

Illini Quarterback Club Dinner
The Illini Quarterback Club will host Dinner before the WDWS Ron Zook Radio
Show on Thursdays before away football games. The live call-in show will
feature Brian Barnhart, the play-by-play voice of Fighting Illini football.
Brian will be fielding questions from the audience at the dinner and via the
phone for Illinois Coach Ron Zook. Dinner starts at 6PM and the Radio Show

FREE Self Defense classes
Classes will be 1-2pm on the following Saturdays: March 13, April 10, May 15, June 12, July 10, August 21, September 11, October 16, Nov. 6 & Dec. 4, 2010.
Who can attend?
This class is FREE to ANYONE who wants to come: we welcome Adult and Teen Men and Women of all abilities. Children 8 and over are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult! Previous martial art experience is not needed.
Why is this class free?
In light of the recent economic crisis, the World Hwa Rang Do® Association and the Hwa Rang Do Champaign Academy is now offering free and open self-defense classes to the public, to empower our communities regardless of financial situation. We believe that everyone
should have basic and effective knowledge on how to defend themselves against an attacker, bully or any other act of physical aggression. We welcome people from all walks of life, genders, and martial arts skill levels to come participate, make new friends and help us build community.
What do we do?
Learn and more importantly “practice” the essentials of awareness and useful self-defense techniques in a friendly, safe environment.
Where is the class held?
The Hwa Rang Do Martial Art Academy is conveniently located 2 blocks south of I-74 in the Northgate Plaza - 1508 N. Cunningham in Urbana. RSVPs are not required but are helpful: call 344-6272. Walk-ins are welcome.
No uniforms required. Wear comfortable clothes that allow freedom of movement.
What is Hwa Rang Do?
The martial and healing art of Hwa Rang Do was founded as a belt-by-belt system in 1960 by Dr. Joo Bang Lee and is one of the most comprehensive martial art systems in the World. This art has been developed in accordance to the ancient Korean principles of Um-Yang, which emphasizes balance in life and harmony with others and nature. The Hwa Rang Do Champaign Academy is a member of the World Hwa Rang Do Association the one and only governing organization for the martial and healing art of Hwa Rang Do.

Several workshops and camps
for adults are being held at the Rock Springs Nature Center in June and July.
Adults and their special buddy, ages 5 – 8 years can also participate in
