17th Annual Children's Building Fair

The 17th Annual Children's Building Fair is scheduled for Saturday May 17th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held in the Orpheum parking lot in downtown Champaign. The Champaign Historic Preservation Commission will be conducting historic walking tours at the event. Walking tours are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. starting and finishing at the Orpheum. Annual Iris Show

The Prairie Iris Society presents their 21st annual iris show May 17th, 2008 at the Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana. All iris growers are invited to enter the show. Entries are accepted from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 17th. Judging begins at 11:00 a.m. The show is free and open to the public after judging is complete at approximately noon.

Champaign County Audubon Society Birdathon

Week of May 11-17: Champaign County Audubon Society (CCAS) Birdathon. We hope everyone will participate in the 2008 CCAS Birdathon Week, either as a birder or a donator. This is our major fund source for our Kendeigh Research Grant program. For details call (217) 344-6803.

State Farm Child Safety Day

State Farm is partnering with Champaign County Safe Kids Coalition for Child Safety Day on Saturday, May 17th from 10am till noon. Come out to the State Farm Operations Center on West Park Court in Champaign. They will be offering free child safety seat inspection services.

Urbana Birthday Event this Saturday at Crystal Lake Park

Citizens of Urbana are invited to Crystal Lake Park at 3 p.m. this Saturday, May 17, to help celebrate Urbana's 175th year with a $1.75 boat ride at Crystal Lake Park by playing the Urbana Park District's Urbana Trivia Hunt game.

Full Moon Dream Circles

The school of Metaphysics will be holding Full Moon Dream Circles beginning on Monday, May 19th and continuing through the rest of the summer. Participants can bring a dream for interpretation, hear other peoples dreams, and learn the language that dreams come in. For more information call 344-2270.

Touch-A-Truck

The Champaign Park District presents Touch-A-Truck on Wednesday, May 21st from 10am to noon at Centennial Park in Champaign. This event is free. Children ages 2 through 5 can climb in, hop on, and honk the horns of some really cool vehicles like tow trucks, fire trucks, monster trucks and more! And don't forget about the FREE ice cream!

Donations needed for Dump and Run Garage Sale 2008

The University YMCA will be collecting items for their dump and run garage sale. Collections will be accepted at the University YMCA, 1001 S. Champaign County Humane Society's Giant Garage Sale

It's not too soon to start planning for the Champaign County Humane Society's Memorial Day Giant Garage Sale. It is May 23 & 24. They will begin accepting donations of your good, usable unwanted items at Kesler Hall at the Champaign County Fairgrounds starting Noon on Thursday May 15 until 4P Sunday May 18.

Then visit the biggest garage sale you've ever seen! Doors will open at 7A on Friday May 23.

The Humane Society is currently looking for volunteers for the day of the sale. If you'd like to volunteer then contact CCHS at 344-7297 or cuhumane.org

Champaign County Audubon Society Sunday Morning Bird Walks

The Champaign County Audubon Society will be holding a series of birdwalks in Busey Woods and Crystal Lake Park on Sundays, beginning Sunday March 2nd through May 25th. Participants will meet at the Anita Purves Nature Center Parking lot, 1505 N. Broadway, Urbana. at 7:30 A.M. Walks finish at 9:00 A.M. For more information call 367-5787

Marble Slab Creamery Donation Day

The owners of Marble Slab Creamery will be making a very special donation in honor of veterans of the country's armed forces on Memorial Day, May 26th. They will be donating 50% of all sales made on Memorial Day to the Savoy Veterans Memorial Fund, a fund authorized for the purpose of constructing a memorial to Savoy veterans of America's armed forces.

St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library

The St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library announces its Spring Used Book Sale. The book sale will begin Monday, May 5th and run until May 29th. Paperbacks are $.25, hardbacks are $.50, magazines $.10. There are some audio books, CDs and videos for $1 each.

State Fire Academy Open House

The Illinois Fire Service Institute will be holding a State Fire Academy Open House on Fri., May 30th from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at The Illinois Fire Service Institute Training Grounds. They are located at 11 Gerty Drive in Champaign.

The is an excellent opportunity for the community to see fire fighting and rescue demonstrations. This event is free.

Bottenfield Elementary School Literacy Coaches Needed

Bottenfield has opportunities as soon as possible for Literacy Coaches to listen to K-5 children read; check on comprehension; and increase fluency. Coaches will need to undertake orientation and will be required for duty no more than 1 hour each week.

May is ALS Awareness Month at the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Amytrophonic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, strikes adults of every age and background.

Muscular Dystrophy Association, or MDA, has spent more than 155 million dollars fighting ALS. MDA is the largest nongovernmental sponsor of ALS services, and research seeking treatments and a cure for ALS.

30th Annual Quilt Show

Get ready for the 30th Annual Quilt Show & Salad Luncheon put on by Sacred Heart Altar Society. The event will be in Villa Grove at the Sacred Heart Church Hall. It will be held on Saturday, June 7th from 10:30 to 1:30 with a luncheon from 11:00 to 1:30. The quilt show has free admission but there is a charge for the luncheon. 11 years and older $6, 6-10 years $2, 5 and under eat free.

Playing It Safe! A Family Safety Fair

Carle Foundation Hospital and Champaign County SAFE KIDS will for the 12th consecutive year sponsor "Playing it Safe! A Family Safety Fair" on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Champaign County Fairgrounds. Admission and all activities are free.
More than 40 interactive learning stations and exhibits will focus on safety awareness for the entire family.
